Amethyst Information
Basic Amethyst Crystal Information:
Amethyst is a purple to violet stone. The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos”, and translates to “I am not drunken”. This is why Amethyst is sometimes called "The Stone of Sobriety". Ancient Greeks believed that the stone, when worn as an amulet, would protect the wearer from becoming drunk from wine. Amethyst was also one of the first stones used for gemstone engravings.
Amethyst is a type of Quartz, which obtains its purple coloring by its iron content. Its color can fade in light, so it is a good idea not to keep Amethyst in direct sunlight. It belongs to the Silicates, and has a hardness of 7. Amethysts have Triagonal Crystal Systems, and possess Hexagonal prisms. Amethyst is readily found in Brazil and Uruguay mines, but is also found in North, Central, and South Aerica, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Other varieties of Amethyst include Ametrine and Amethyst Quartz. Ametrine is half Amethyst and half Citrine. It is also called trystine, and found in Brazil. Amethyst Quartz has bands of Amethyst and Milky Quartz, appearing as bands of violet and white. It is also referred to as “dogtooth” Amethyst.
