Basic Fluorite Crystal Information:
Fluorite has a Moh’s hardness of 4. It’s crystals are cubic, or occasionally octahedra. Its chemical makeup is calcium fluoride. Fluorite is a stone that comes in numerous colors. The most common shades that are found include purple, green, yellow, clear, and blue. Fluorite is also found in shades of brown, white, red, pink, black, and orange. Fluorite can be found in Germany, England, United States, China, Canada, Norway, Argentina, Mexico, Burma, France, Namibia, Austria, and Switzerland.
Fluorite derives its name from the Latin word “fluor” which means “to flow”. It was originally called fluorspar. This name was assigned to the mineral due to the fact that it has been used as a flux (helping other metals to melt quicker or fuse easier) in metal work. The term “fluorescence” owes its name to the mineral Fluorite. Fluorite usually exhibits fluorescence when the mineral is exposed to UV light. Not all fluorite stones will fluoresce, but many do. The stone will fluoresce under UV light if it contains certain impurities or disturbances in its crystal lattice.
